The most popular Mexican destination is undoubtedly the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mexican area of tropical beaches: Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum
We have traveled several times in this area, the journey has never been disappointing.
The archaeological sites are also important and very representative in this area: Chichen Itza, Tulum, Uxmal. Colonial cities are not lacking, Merida, Valladolid, Campeche. Without a doubt the Yucatan peninsula abounds in natural and anthropological beauties.
Cancun and Playa del Carmen are now very similar.
Cancun, founded in 1961 was the Mexican response to the US economic blockade towards Cuba, it wanted to create an alternative seaside resort in Cuba and the area was chosen for its beautiful beach with the equally beautiful Isla Mujeres opposite the beach. Currently Cancun is a classic seaside resort with excellent local and restaurants, excellent and varied and well organized Hotels. Also offer very good entertainment and sports activities.
Playa del Carmen does not have a promenade, it has a street, Fifth Avenue, which is full of bars, restaurants, discos, shops. Many hotels and b&b, hotels on the beach mostly All Inclusive. In front of Playa del Carmen the famous island of Cozumel. What sets it apart from Cancun is the rub. In the collective imagination the Playa del Carmen of 20 years ago remained, frank and not touristy but things have changed and today is what must be a seaside resort of our times.

The most interesting component of the journey in Yucatan is undoubtedly represented by archaeological and colonial sites and cities.
Both from Cancun and Playa del Carmen you can set off on an itinerary that includes the Mayan ruins as well as the colonial vestiges.
Chichén Itzà with the famous stepped pyramid and the unique astronomical observatory. In the archaeological area you can stay, with the exceptional possibility of walking in the area after the many caravans of tourists have already returned to their Hotels.
Uxmal, with its elegant pyramid with rounded corners, here too you can stay in the archaeological area. Tulum, the only coastal Maya site of great impact with a beautiful beach. Many other archaeological sites are present in the Yucatan, among the many we mention some: Calakmul, Becan, Coba, Mayapan, Acanceh.
The Spanish colonial era, despite the brutality, has generated important architectural testimonies. The area is dotted with churches and convents and colonial cities such as Merida, Valladolid and Campeche.

There are many naturalistic areas in Yucatan.
Near Merida, the Reserva de la Biosfera Celestun.
North of Valladolid the Ria Lagartos Natural Park.
North of Cancun, the Flora and Faura Yum Balam protection area.
South of Tulum the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
Finally in the south-east of Campeche the Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul.
Ultimately the Yucatan has so much to offer travelers, we believe it is a shame to stay in one location and miss the wonders of this area. We shot it with Car hire with itineraries that allowed us to fully enjoy the sea, Mayan ruins, colonial routes and cities, including some gems like the refined hotel discovered at Sisal, immersed in the silence broken only by the roar of sea is further enriched by the spectacle of flocks of pink flamingos that move along the coast between the naturalistic areas of the area.
